Labdrop bacteriostatic water, often shortened to bac water, is sterile purified water with 0.9% w/v benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. It comes in a 10 ml Type I borosilicate vial, sealed with a butyl stopper and a blue aluminium flip-off cap.
What the benzyl alcohol does
Sterile water has no preservative, so once a vial is opened it is meant for one use. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol in bac water stops bacteria growing in the vial, so it can be used for multiple withdrawals for 28 days after the stopper is first pierced. That is why it is the usual diluent for reconstituting lyophilised laboratory reagents.
Storage and shelf life
Keep vials sealed, between 2 and 25 °C and away from light. A fridge is fine but not needed. Unopened, a vial lasts 24 months from its fill date. The lot number and expiry are printed on every label, and the QR code links back to this page. Discard a vial 28 days after first opening.
Packs and bulk
Buy a single vial, or packs of 10 and 50 to bring the price per vial down. Labs that apply their own labels can buy the same water unlabelled in packs of 50, 100 and 200.
Everything is held in UK stock. Orders placed before 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same working day by Royal Mail Tracked 24. Answers to the most common questions are in our bac water FAQ.
